The story
In 1848, Ellen Craft escaped slavery by disguising herself as a white man. For four days, she convinced ticket agents, guards, and fellow passengers that she was a white gentleman travelling north for medical treatment. Her husband went with her as her slave. Ellen's daring act brought her and her husband to Philadelphia and to a future in the abolitionist movement.
