House My house uses structural insulated panels (SIPs) for the walls and roof and a concrete slab for interior mass.

It's designed for solar gain in winter; other heat comes from a small woodstove and a nonelectric propane radiator.

The shell was completed in early 2003. I'm finishing the rest as I find time and money.

The main idea. Why I picked the wall system I did, plus the main goals of the project.

The details. Specifics on the wall system, foundation, roof, windows, and appliances.

Performance. Low heating demands and good air quality as the house experiences its first winter.

The floorplans. With notes.

SIPs. What are they? Are they halfway sustainable?

Stained concrete floor. I got an acid-stain look for about $5 using non-toxic iron sulfate.

Earth plaster. I applied earth plaster directly to the interior OSB but found that my favorite mix didn't stick. Results of my tests; photos.

No radiant floor heat. Why I decided against in-floor heating.
